“There is no one holy like the Lord;
1 Samuel 2:2
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.“
A Prayer of Relief
Just like anything else in the Old Testament, we need to understand the context of where this verse is located before we start analyzing what we're looking at. Here we have Hannah. Hannah is Samuel's mother. The book of 1 Samuel records the life of Samuel so we need to understand who Hannah is in order to understand who Samuel is.
To put this concisely, Hannah was having troubles giving birth to a child so she made a promise to God that whenever she had a child she would dedicate to God. That child was Samuel. As soon as Samuel was old enough she took Samuel to the temple and dedicated him before the Lord, where Samuel would then serve in the temple his whole life and eventually become a prophet.
And that leads us to 1 Samuel 2:2. This is a prayer of Hannah as she's dedicating Samuel to the Lord. In it she has this confession. She says, as our verse of the day says, "There is no one holy like the Lord. There is no one beside you. There is no rock like our God."
This confession is coming from a woman who had a hard time doing what was expected of women of this time, and that is to produce an heir for their husband. There is a huge sigh of relief in this prayer that she was finally able to do what the culture expected of her. Beyond that she understood that this blessing came from God and God alone and so in this dedication of Samuel to God she lists off some attributes of God to fully express this prayer of hers.
She says that no one is holy like the Lord. There is no one else who is beside him. In fact there is no rock that is a strong foundation like our God. Here she's expressing that there is no one who comes close to the Lord. No one has the same level of holiness or righteousness as God. He is first. He is foremost. There is no one beside him. Then, finally, we know a rock is a steady place and a steady place is where you want to build your life.
Nothing Beside Him
If we're honest it's a little harder to apply Old Testament scripture to our lives today but there is, of course, universal truth to every scripture or passage that we read in the Bible. Here, thinking universally, the Lord is still holy. There is no one like him. What that means is we can approach his throne boldly through the blood of Jesus and ask for what we need. Jesus has made us holy for those who believe in him so that we can approach God like this.
Just as he is still holy, there is still no one beside him. There is no one who can take his place, no one who can hold a candle to him. All light pales in comparison to the light and holiness of the Lord.
That means that we can cast our cares on him, understanding that he is faithful. He loves us and he will make a way for us. It also means that we can rest assured that by placing our faith in him we are placing our faith in the best place possible.
Beyond that since there is no one beside him and since all light does pale in comparison to him, we should, as the Old Testament also commands, have no other gods before him. Things like work, family, friends, or anything else that would take our attention from God should all fall in second place or fall in line behind God.
Lastly there still is no rock like our God. God is still faithful. Just as he was faithful to Hannah, he'll be faithful to us to answer our prayers. They may not look as we want them to look but he is still faithful to answer prayers today.
Prayer
Jesus, help us to put our faith in you. Help us to see how you're moving in our lives, to see how you're faithful today, to see how your holiness looks today, and to see how still nothing can compare to you. Give us strength to put aside the things that distract us from you and the things that keep us from following you fully. We pray all this in Jesus' name, amen
